HOOVER -- G.W. Carver High won the National Select 7-on-7 Challenge football tournament Saturday, beating McGill-Toolen 30-15 and 27-24 in the championship round.
"It was great for the kids and for the school and program," Carver coach Al Pogue said Sunday. "The kids have worked hard all summer and they deserve it."
Carver, which finished 10-2 last year in Class 5A, moves back to Class 6A this season. The Wolverines, who play their opener Aug. 27 at Opelika, hope Saturday's title helps stoke momentum.
"It guarantees that we have some guys who will step up," Pogue said. "It let us know we have some guys who are capable of making plays in a big-time atmosphere."
