TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 2, 2010) – The Panhandle Conference media announced its 2010 all-conference basketball teams on Tuesday. Nine members of the conference’s media, representing all five PC markets, selected first- and second-team all-conference squads, as well as an all-freshman team, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year for both men and women.
Northwest Florida State College’s Brian Bryant was the unanimous pick for Player of the Year on the men’s side while Gulf Coast Community College’s Andrea Smith was voted the PC’s top female player.
Northwest Florida State and Gulf Coast also claimed the Coach of the Year awards, as Bruce Stewart and Roonie Scovel were recognized for leading their respective teams to the 2010 PC Championships.
Northwest Florida State’s Sherrard Brantley was named men’s Freshman of the Year while Pensacola Junior College’s Karneshia Garrett earned the honor on the women’s side.
In the women’s voting, Smith was the lone unanimous first-team pick, receiving 86 points in the voting to easily outdistance Chipola’s Bianca Jarrett for Player of the Year honors.
Smith, a native of Lakeland, Fla., and a University of South Florida signee, averaged 16.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.3 steals for the Lady Commodores, who won a 13th straight PC Championship in 2010. The sharp-shooting guard also shot 38.9 percent from beyond the three-point stripe.
Smith and the FCCAA’s top-ranked Lady Commodores (25-1) will open play in the FCCAA Tournament at 6 p.m. (CST) Thursday against No. 9 Daytona State College in a quarterfinal match-up.
Joining Smith and Jarrett on the first-team squad were Pensacola’s Deana Allen, Northwest Florida State’s Shamar Harris and Tallahassee’s Mansa El.
Garrett received 25 points in the all-freshman voting, just two more than Gulf Coast’s Kyra Crosby. They were joined on the all-freshman squad by Tallahassee’s Tyesha Robinson, Pensacola’s Meghan Perkins and Chipola’s Ty O’Neil.
Three of the five all-freshman honorees – Garrett, Crosby and Perkins – also earned a spot on the second-team all-PC squad.
Rounding out the women’s all-PC second team were Pensacola teammates Najet Ouardad and Jessica Merritt and Northwest Florida State’s Josette Campbell.
