The number 448 isn't his 40-yard dash, his batting average or his shooting percentage; it's his GPA
Steven Brabham is a senior at Jay High School and will be graduating this spring with a host of impressive honors. Brabham is a tri-sport athlete at Jay, playing baseball, basketball and football. He plays these sports while ranking in the top of his class with a 3.92 GPA, 4.48 weighted. “My mom and dad always pushed me to study and make good grades,” said Brabham about his astonishing GPA as an athlete. With practice and games taking up a lot of time throughout the entire school season and then some Brabham had to make time to study. “I would have to come home after practice and study,” said Brabham. He studied a lot from his freshman year up until he was a junior, but has been able to take it a little easier as a senior this year. “I haven’t had to study too much this year because most of my classes are already done with,” he added. Brabham has already been accepted to Florida State University and is ecstatic to be a Seminole. With his father, Matthew Brabham, graduating from FSU and his older brother, Robert Brabham, attending the university now, choosing his academic future was no problem for the youngest of the bunch. “I would go down and visit Robert almost every week over the summer and I just like the atmosphere down there,” said Brabham. His father and grandfather both being teachers, Brabham has entertained the idea of following in those footsteps one day, but also might choose to go into engineering. Brabham will not continue a competitive career in athletics, despite having a couple looks in football, but won’t forget the love affair with sports he started in the very beginning. “My mom said my first word was ball,” Brabham said. Steven started playing baseball when he was around three, were his dad coached and his mom, Lori, support her son in what he did. Brabham started playing basketball when at a little bit later date where he used to play with his older brother in the driveway. “I started to play my older brother in basketball when I was in the 4th or 5th grade,” said Brabham. In his high school career, Brabham played quarterback in football, three-guard in basketball, and a slew of positions in baseball including pitcher, right field and shortstop. He grew up idolizing Michael Jordan. His mom gave him Jordan’s book, Driven, for Christmas one year and Brabham read it in about two days. As a kid, the only way his parents could get him to sit still was to put him down in front of a braves’ game where he would sit and watch the whole game. “I was the hyper one. The only time I would sit still was watching the Braves,” said Brabham. Brabham’s favorite moment in sports was when he was a sophomore and a backup quarterback at Jay. The starting quarterback went out of a game with a concussion in which Brabham filled in. He threw a winning touchdown pass to tight end Devin Castleberry with about two minutes left in the game. With all the hard work and dedication Brabham has put in throughout his high school career and even prior to, it has paid off as he will be attending Florida State in the fall to continue his credible success. |
